Chapter 13

The entire week Mary was gone, Alette received texts and pictures from her, Rowena, and Chad in a group message. Mary and Rowena sent photos of the sunrises, sunsets, and various wildlife at the beach.

Alette commented on the beautiful scenery. Chad responded with random pictures of a table or piece of fruit and messages like #bestdayever and #effervescent.

Mary sent private messages as well. She was dismayed that Dexter didn’t join them on the trip, but it was because Steve worried Dexter wouldn’t have been objective enough if a risk presented.

“That’s pretty romantic if you think about it,” Alette texted.

“It is, though it sucks too because he’s not here, and I brought my cute bikinis ☹,” Mary responded.

Alette messaged; “So send him pictures of you in those bikinis and let him know how much you miss him. ”

“That’s a great idea! You’re the best! ♥,” Mary replied.

Rowena texted Alette privately as well, but Alette wasn’t sure how to respond.

Alette tried to keep an open mind, but it wasn’t working. Every time she read a text from Rowena, she would think about the article and flush with guilt and shame. Unsure of how to make peace with all of it, she kept her responses short.

“Are you meeting Chad at the plaza?” Rowena texted.

“Yeah, I’m about to drive over,” Alette responded.

“Great. Have fun and be safe Happy Fourth!” Rowena texted.

“Thanks. You too! ” Alette texted.

Alette drove to Gwyar Lake Plaza as a knot formed in her belly. She was about to hang out with Chad, and he had no clue she was writing an article about his father. She pushed the guilt down and parked in a spot that happened to be beside Chad’s car.

Chad hopped out of the car with Dexter and Jeremy. “Great timing. We just got here too!” Chad said as he pulled Alette in for a hug. “You’re not dressed up.” He huffed dramatically. “I see how it is. And now I know who you really get all dressed up for.”

Alette blushed and ignored him. “Good to see all of you,” she said as she nodded to Dexter and Jeremy.

“You as well,” Dexter said. He pulled her in for a hug. “That’s for telling Mary to send me pictures.”

Alette laughed and swatted his arm. “Glad to be of service,” she said. She wagged a finger at him. “You better have sent her pictures back.”

Dexter blushed and cleared his throat. “I did,” he said.

“I’m sure that alone made her week,” Alette said.

They all went inside the Mexican restaurant.

“Chad, it’s good to see you! Your table is ready,” Jorge cheerfully said. He led them through the restaurant until they were outside on the deck that overlooked the lake.

The restaurant was on the second floor, providing them an excellent view of the lake and everything occurring below.

Alette was grateful to find there was plenty of shade as they sat down. She sat beside the railing, and Chad sat beside her. Dexter sat across from her.

“This is a good spot. We’ll be able to see the fireworks from here,” Alette murmured.
